'Maranoa Shield' by Joanne Currie Nalingu

December 2005 to May 2006

Caloundra artist Joanne Currie Nalingu's artwork uses dot technique with traditional markings and the pattern of the Maranoa Shield in two transverse bands. The particular work was chosen because of the subtlety and non-figurative nature of the work and the accentuation of the handcraft in the elongated rectangle that is the billboard.

The work was commissioned as a painting in 1:5 aspect ratio and then photographed to create the digital image for the billboard.

Joanne grew up at an Aboriginal mission near Mitchell, 800km west of Brisbane, and later moved to Brisbane where she married her fisherman husband Patrick and started a family.

The family then moved to Caloundra, and It was there that Joanne began to paint. Many of her images and designs are inspired by the Maranoa River where she grew up and the shield designs of her people.

Joanne's original painting is now held in the QUT Art Collection.
