'One Dances' by Judith Wright
October 2004 to February 2005
The work explores a relationship…male/female, or a person and an image of a person (perhaps a memory or an aspiration) by prominent Queensland artist Judith Wright.
In compositional terms the four repeats encourage different ‘takes’ on the nature of the relationship whilst offering no answers. The image on the left puts the expression (thus the emotion) on the face of the marionette whilst ‘blacking’ out the face/emotion of the human. The enigmatic quality of the work invites repeated viewing and contemplation.
The image is an adaptation of One Dances, a 15-minute film that traces a woman's 30-year journey to rediscover where her lost child is buried. Told with a combination of dance and light, the story is a glimpse into the artist's own life.
Judith's billboard was launched by then Queensland Premier Peter Beattie.
