'I made a camera' by Tracey Moffatt

May to October 2004

I Made a Camera is a major piece that typifies much of Tracey Moffatt's work. Intensely autobiographic, it recreates a moment from her childhood in Brisbane where the elements of play and the relationship to adults in a racially mixed family are represented. The image prefigures her own rise to international'star' status with the camera.

I made a Camera featured in a major exhibition of her work at the MCA in the Sydney Festival in 2004. The work was chosen for this billboard following Tracey's viewing of the site the previous year and her wish to reconnect with her roots with such a public showing of her work. This is the largest representation of her work made so far, and will be photographed in its architectural context to appear in a forthcoming book on her work.

Tracey's artwork was the first to appear on The Billboard, and was unveiled by Queensland Premier Peter Beattie during the launch of QUT's $60 million Creative Industries Precinct in 2004. Tracey is now based in New York.
