Shellywood by Peter Burke
September 2007 to February 2008
About the work
Peter Burke's Shellywood is a brightly-hued and extravagant celebration of Eastern pop-culture reminiscent of India's iconic hand painted billboards.
Peter's alter ego Shelly Innocence stars as a Bollywood movie maiden promoting her latest blockbuster (a love triangle melodrama, naturally) with her fiance from an arranged marriage, boyfriend, doting grandmother and disapproving father (all played by a cleverly disguised Burke) in tow.
Inspired while participating in an artist residency in New Dehli, Shellywood is also subtle experiment in manipulating public perception and challenges the borders between art, advertising and entertainment.
